Description

Cabbage Roll Casserole is a comforting and hearty dish that combines all the classic flavors of traditional cabbage rolls in a simplified, one-pan casserole. Packed with ground meat, tender cabbage, and savory rice, all smothered in rich tomato sauce, this dish is sure to become a family favorite. It’s perfect for busy weeknights and easy to customize with your favorite ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Ground Meat: Choose between beef, turkey, or pork—or mix them for added flavor.
  • Cabbage: A medium-sized head of cabbage, roughly chopped, gives that signature texture and taste.
  • Rice: White or brown rice, cooked and ready to layer into the casserole.
  • Tomato Sauce: A rich, flavorful sauce to tie everything together.
  • Onions and Garlic: These aromatics pack a punch of flavor.
  • Seasonings: Think salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and dried oregano.
  • Cheese: Optional, but a sprinkle of mozzarella or cheddar on top can’t hurt.

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients:
Begin by cooking the rice according to the package instructions. While the rice cooks, chop the cabbage and set it aside.
  • Cook the Ground Meat:
In a large skillet, brown the ground meat over medium heat, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Once fully cooked, drain any excess fat.
  • Sauté the Vegetables:
Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked meat. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and softened.
  • Layer the Casserole:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half of the chopped cabbage, followed by half of the cooked meat mixture, and half of the cooked rice. Repeat with the remaining cabbage, meat, and rice.
  • Add the Tomato Sauce and Seasonings:
Pour the tomato sauce over the top layer and sprinkle with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and dried oregano.
  • Bake:
Cover the casserole with foil and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to allow the top to brown slightly.
  • Optional: Add Cheese:
If using cheese, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella or cheddar on top of the casserole during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  • Serve:
Once baked, remove from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can use a combination of ground meats (beef, pork, turkey) for added flavor.
  • For a lighter option, try using brown rice instead of white rice.
  • Feel free to add more vegetables, like bell peppers or carrots, to the casserole for added nutrition.
  • For a gluten-free version, check that your tomato sauce is gluten-free.
